Maxtor Basics 1TB Desktop External Hard Drive
1TB (STM310005EHD301-RK) Desktop 3.5 inch External Hard Drive from Maxtor
The need for simple, worry-free, reliable storage has rapidly increased with the expanding collection of consumer’s digital photos, audio files and documents. Maxtor Basics Desktop External Hard Drive is one of the very few 1TB external hard drives that are currently available in the market.
Poor design:
It has a black plastic box like finish which looks chunky when compared to the other 1TB external hard drives available in the market, having sleek metallic lines. Its over-size is reflected in its dimensions which is 203 mm x 44.5 mm x 127 mm. The unit is slightly curved which makes it very difficult to stack it with other external storage devices. The lightness of this drive weighing 1.0569 kg cannot be considered as a plus factor in Maxtor Basics as it is not having a rubber feet, making it very liable to accidental falls. But on the greener side, Maxtor has included shock protection, EMI protection, and the new SATA hard drive technology.

Capacity and usage:
Maxtor Basics 3.5″ USB2.0 SATA External Hard Drive comes in three capacities such as, 500GB, 750GB and 1TB. It can be used to store data files, photos, songs and digital videos. Every 100GB of storage can hold up to 32000 JPEG digital photos, 1665 hours of MP3 music and 100 hours of digital video, which means this enormous capacity of 1TB can store 320,000 JPEG digital photos, 16660 hours of MP3 music and 1000 hours of digital video.
It is an ideal drive for home and office usage. This extra capacity provided by this drive can be used to free up the space on your PC, for better performance. Maxtor Basics 1TB Desktop External Hard Disk Drive is both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 compatible.
Ease of use:
It is very easy to use as all that you will need to do is, just connect the power adaptor, then connect the USB cable in to your PC or Mac and the extra drive appears in your system.
Performance:
In order to enable fast drive performance and seamless data exchange, this external hard drive has a spindle speed of 7200 rpm and instant access to your files is aided by the 32MB cache buffer. The bus transfer rate of Maxtor 1TB is, 480MB/sec. The file transfer performance of Maxtor Basics 1TB was average and as expected of a desktop USB disk. Its performance lagged behind the other 1TB USB Desktop External Hard Drives when it comes to the writing of small files. Yet, it is not that bad and is fast enough for everyday usage.
Box contents and warranty:
Maxtor provides Maxtor Basics Desktop External Hard Drive with three years limited warranty. The box contents of this device includes the Maxtor Basics Desktop External Hard Drive itself, USB2.0 cable, a power adapter, quick start guide and the warranty information.

Verdict:
The Maxtor Basics 3.5 inch 1TB Desktop External Hard Drive costs much higher than some of the other 1TB hard drives but is not having a justifiable design or even a backup software. It is relatively expensive at around 12p per GB. We recommend Freecoms 1TB hard drive to Maxtor Basics 1TB as it has similar features, better performance and a more appealing design costing much lesser.

I’ve got the 250GB version of the Maxtor Basics external hard drive. Performance-wise, I’ve found it okay - no noticeable difference from other drives that I own.
It does have a major drawback, however, and that’s the noise level. Hold the drive in the air while it’s working and you won’t notice any problem. Put it on a surface, though, and you’ll find it emits a very strong vibration that affects any surface it’s placed on - table, floor, top of computer case, or whatever. That surface will start ‘buzzing’ and you’ll definitely notice it. I bought some rubber feet to stick underneath the drive case, but it didn’t improve things.
If this drive is placed on a carpeted floor upstairs in our house, the vibrations can be heard throughout the house at night, so it’s not the sort of drive you’d want to leave archiving or transferring data overnight.
