The External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (eSATA) provides faster data transfer between the motherboard and the mass storage device.
The Seagate eSATA External Hard disk with 300GB and 500 GB capacity helps in backing up huge data from multiple systems at unbelievable speeds of 3 GB/s. The eSATA HDD are designed in such a way that they are multiple times faster in performance than the existing USB or FireWire interfaces. |
Seagate External Hard Disk - Editor’s Review

Though the USB or FireWire interfaces are the ones that are most usable, the SATA is becoming the standard for high speed interfaces. The integration of the NCQ (Native Command Queuing) to the SATA hard drives by Seagate has improved the performance on the hard disks by internally optimizing the way the data is handled and hence reducing the unnecessary drive movement.
Aware that the users might not have the eSATA port on the existing machine, Seagate has mitigated this by bundling a Promise eSATA controller PCI Card thus catering to a wider audience.

I purchased one of these for home use - c. 2 years ago - brilliant!
Unfortunately, I cannot seem to buy this same type again.
I bought another Seagate Free Agent hard drive - (brown with the orange that lights up) - however I am nowhere near as impressed - it gets hot so I can’t have it on for long.
I wanted it for extra storage of music.
