For the past few years, Verbatim has been one of the well-known names in the industry of data storage. Their fame is due to their quality and remarkable designs. Here, we are reviewing the Verbatim 2.5“ 500GB Portable Hard Drive.

Attractive outlook:

It is a palm sized grey colour device with a very elegant design. It is a light weighted device weighing only 170 grams. Lighted blue LED plastics are placed around the edges providing you with a very pleasant visual treat. However, these plastics do make some creaky noise when the device is held in hand. when you pick it up, the verbatim feels hollow and creaky. When it is kept at a distance, untouched, its looks may win your heart with a great looking finish, but if it would keeps its looks long, only time can answer.

Prone to scratches:

There is no carry pouch for the hard drive provided along with the package, and with the spray-on faux-metal finishing, the drive might get easily scratched on get contact with everyday objects in the laptop bag or even your desktop.

Portable:

The word portable very much suites the Verbatim 2.5“ Portable as the entire device has its dimension as just 21x85x135mm which means it can sit comfortably in your shirt pocket.

Performance issues:

Verbatim 500GB is probably enough for most of the tasks but if you deal with heaps of data transfers, then Plextor’s PX-PH320US might be a better choice. This Verbatim is conspicuously noisier in use and when idling on the desktop. Not loud, but certainly noticeable.

The USB cable that is provided has two connectors and hence if the power from one of them is not enough, the other can be attached too for additional energy.

Premium Edition 2.5 inch, 500GB External Hard Drive from Verbatim is packed in a similar fashion as any other Verbatim flash memory packages. The contents of the package include Portable Hard Drive, USB 2.0 cable, Nero BACKITUP 2 Essentials back up software, Quick Start Guide, User Guide stored on the Hard Drive.

Verdict:

The build quality, elegant and compact design with enormous memory makes Verbatim 2.5“ Portable 500GB Hard Drive stand tall from its other competitions. It seems to cost reasonable, and this might be one of the most appealing factors. If you want to carry around large amounts of data with you, then Verbatim USB 2.0 500GB Premium Edition is the one for you. But if that’s not the case then, Plextor’s PX-PH320US or the DriveStation Combo4 (with same capacity) provides more value.
